Last Friday was to be the make or break night for Retford, in September me and Gus came to the dissection that if our numbers were down then we would close the venue, I think a lot of clubs are considering this at the moment and some have even closed there doors.
Any way we coved our costs and after a chat with Tony from the Masonic Hall I am pleased to say Retford Soul is firmly situated for the foreseeable future. (Thanks to all involved at the Masonic Hall)
Now for the review of our first anniversary short and sweet.
As always the lads played up a storm plenty of monster oldies being played out big thanks to Steve, Jez and of course Gus for the past year I know the quality will go on through out 2009.
Now our Guest Smudge and Coops what can I say that has not already been said, Smudge played a cracking set that keep all in attendance on the floor, not surprising given his collection of records monster track followed monster track if only we had a few more people to enjoy them.
Thanks Smudge it was a pleasure having you grace our decks I hope it’s not the last time.
Now Coops, this chap has been a long time supporter of smooth soul all the way back to its conception in Grantham and every time he has played at one of our nights he has never disappointed and Friday was no different a mix of oldies and modern dance floor fillers keep the floor moving. Once again thanks for being with us on or Birthday Mick and thanks for your kind words and support.
To all who attended the night thanks and enjoy the DVD that includes Ash and Keith who jumped over that North South divide I hope you got back through customs ok.
Once again to all involved with the Masonic hall thanks for the life line and thanks for your kind words.
Oh ya November is BOGOF night ya two for the price of one so bring a friend.[b] Smile

This is a venue that is both welcoming and perfectly apt for a northern soul night.
Geographically positioned just off the A1 in the north midlands.
Promoted by a man who’s love for all things northern is only matched by both his enthusiasm and friendliness.
Resident dee-jays chosen for their diverse ‘specialities’ each complimenting the other.
Steve Greenly (Mr. Motown) the name speaks for itself, Gus (Mr. Wigan) again his preferred tunes to play are hinted to in his nickname. Jez Langley, across the board, across the decades and a purveyor of quality northern and rare soul add infinitum and ‘Caveman’ Pete, likes his sixties as much as his 21st century sounds.
Add to this a perfectly sprung dance floor, cheap bar separate from the dance floor for those who wish to socialise and you have, as Tommy Neal would say “A Happening”.
This was the first anniversary of this fine club and what it lacked in numbers it more than gained in audience dance-floor participation and a whole night of tunes to dance for.
Icing on the cake, Andrew ‘Smudge’ Smith from Peterborough playing current monsters that would not only break a bank but also the hearts of the most ardent northern soul lover by filling him or her with truly wondrous sounds.
There were free DVDs and CDs for any one who was wearing white socks, this may put some people of but believe me, it’s just the club’s nick name, it’s not compulsory and it in no way affects the quality of this friendly and soul-full event.
